Can I Brew Kombucha with Tulsi? November 15, 2009

I have just purchased the Deluxe brewing kit and will start my first batch this weekend using the ingredients supplied.

I am a big fan of Tulsi tea and I am curious if that tea can be used to as a base form Kombucha tea. Since it is not a real tea plant, it is the from the Holy Basil plant, does K Tea need to be based on the “real” tea plant?
Thanks for the information and video instructions as I jump into this project!

Hey Mark!

So here’s the skinny… you CAN brew kombucha with other herbs/botanicals besides tea (I travelled to south america personally to get the BEST yerba mate for my brew.. which is not tea along with Rooibos which I also recommend for brewing for those that wish to make caffeine free kombucha!***).

BUT (there’s always a but, but this is a skinny small but) – I recommend 2 things:

1. Brew for at least 2 months with tea (camellias sinensis to be fancy).. we have our organic secret fair trade tea blend on our site.. but in a pinch any TEA will be fine. After 2 months you can start experimenting with other things besides tea.. such as tulsi (which is great, I’m a big fan of Ayurveda!)

2. VERY IMPORTANT!! still keep a 50/50 ratio of tea in your mix. So for your specific question: use half tulsi and half tea (black, green, white, oolong, combination) — you will still get a different unique taste profile and benefits with the tulsi.. while ensuring you have enough nitrogen for you scoby provided from the tea.

Happy (tulsi) Brewin’,
Dave

http://happyliverinc.com is the maker of the Kombucha I drink. It’s live Kombucha and from what I see has the best results. I want to try and make my own soon, but have not found the time. There is definitely a big move to people using Kombuchia. I see it in dry tea as well but have stayed away from that because I hear it isn’t as good? The site above only deals to Heath Food Stores, but most will happily order it for you mine did…I will soon try and make my own and I think I may try the dry tea bags….

Have any of you used the dry tea bags of Kombucha? Do you see any positive benefits? The name of the Tea I get is Ciaras Great Tasting Kombucha. The owner has a really cool story how it has helped her daughter. Check it out and if you use dry Kombucha I would like to hear if you find it has any positive benefits.

I read on the blog that you can brew kombucha with other botanicals than just tea and that you recommend a 50% tea/50% other mix. I was wondering if there was some way to “brew” kombucha using wheatgrass, without cooking, of course. Maybe by diluting the juice?

On the following website (http://www.vivanatura.hu/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=&product_id=211&category_id=85&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=56&vmcchk=1&lang=en) they are selling kombucha concentrate with wheatgrass.

Is this brewed as kombucha or added when it is bottled? Would it be possible to add wheatgrass juice when bottling kombucha like you would fruit juice? It would be a wonderful combination healthwise if it was safe
